Laser Hair Removal Aftercare: What to Do (and What to Avoid)

Laser hair removal aftercare explained. What to avoid, how to protect your skin, and how to get the best results.

Laser Hair Removal Aftercare: What to Do (and What to Avoid)

Intro

Laser hair removal is a heat-based treatment.

That heat does not disappear the moment your session ends. It remains in the skin for hours, sometimes longer depending on how reactive your skin is.

Because of this, what you do after your treatment matters just as much as the treatment itself.

Following proper aftercare helps protect your skin, reduce irritation, and ensure the best possible results over the course of your sessions.

What’s Normal After Laser Hair Removal

After a treatment, it is normal to experience:

• Redness in the treated area

• Small bumps around hair follicles

• A warm, sunburn-like sensation

These effects can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days, depending on your skin.

This is a normal response and typically resolves on its own.

Why Aftercare Matters More Than You Think

Laser creates controlled heat in the follicle.

If additional heat is introduced too soon, it can prolong inflammation in the skin.

This is what many people do not realize.

Stacking heat sources on top of residual laser heat can extend irritation beyond the expected window. In some cases, this may lead to temporary side effects such as prolonged redness or pigmentation changes.

Good aftercare helps the skin return to baseline quickly and safely.

Avoid Heat for 24 to 48 Hours

For at least 24 to 48 hours after treatment, avoid:

• Hot showers or baths

• Saunas or steam rooms

• Intense workouts or sweating

• Heating pads or thermal blankets

Even internal heat from exercise and physical exertion can rise to the surface of the skin and increase sensitivity.

Keeping the skin cool and calm is key.

Underarms and Product Use

For underarm treatments:

• Avoid deodorant for at least 24 hours

• Use only gentle, non-irritating products

The pores remain open after treatment, and applying products too soon can lead to irritation.

Sun Exposure and SPF Are Critical

Sun protection is one of the most important parts of aftercare.

Avoid direct sun exposure for at least two weeks before and after each session.

Use a broad-spectrum SPF 50 daily on treated areas.

Even outside of that window, sun protection should remain consistent throughout your entire treatment series.

Sun exposure can limit the settings that can be safely used during treatment, which may impact your results over time.

Avoid Active Ingredients on Treated Skin

After treatment, avoid applying products that contain active ingredients such as:

• Glycolic acid

• Salicylic acid

• Retinoids

Stick to simple, gentle skincare.

If your skin feels irritated after using a product, that is your signal to stop.

What to Expect in the Days After Treatment

Between 5 and 20 days after treatment, you may notice what looks like hair regrowth.

This is not new hair.

It is treated hair shedding from the follicle.

You can help this process by gently exfoliating with a washcloth after a few days.

What Not to Do Between Sessions

To protect your results:

• Do not wax

• Do not pluck

• Do not thread

These methods remove the hair from the root, which interferes with the laser process.

Shaving or trimming is fine as needed.

Simple At-Home Aftercare Essentials

You do not need a complicated routine, but having a few basics at home helps:

• Cold compress or ice packs to reduce heat

• A gentle soothing post-procedure gel

• OTC Hydrocortisone cream for mild irritation

• Antihistamine support if you are prone to itching

• A high-quality SPF 50 sunscreen

Many clients prefer mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide. Examples include EltaMD, SkinCeuticals, TiZO, and Neutrogena zinc formulas.

The Bottom Line

Laser hair removal is a highly effective treatment when done properly.

But results depend on more than just the laser.

They depend on consistency, proper settings, and how well you take care of your skin after each session.

At Beam Laser Spa, we take aftercare seriously and review it with every client at every visit.

Simple instructions do not mean they are optional.

Following them closely helps ensure a smooth, safe, and effective treatment series.
