How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal: The Complete Pre-Treatment Guide

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal: The Complete Pre-Treatment Guide

Preparing for your laser hair removal appointment is one of the most important steps in achieving safe, effective, and long-lasting results.

While advanced laser technology plays a major role in treatment success, your preparation beforehand directly affects how efficiently the laser targets the hair follicle and how your skin responds afterward.

At Beam Laser Spa, we've been performing laser hair removal in New York City since 2007.

Over the years, we've found that many of the questions clients ask before their appointments are surprisingly similar:

  • Should I shave?
  • Can I wax first?
  • Is sunblock enough if I've been in the sun?
  • Can I wear deodorant?
  • What happens if I accidentally plucked a few hairs?

This guide answers those questions while explaining the science behind each recommendation.

Why Preparation Matters

Laser hair removal works by delivering concentrated light energy into the melanin (pigment) within the hair shaft.

That energy travels down into the hair follicle, where heat damages the structures responsible for future hair growth.

For treatment to be both safe and effective, the laser needs:

  • Pigment inside the hair follicle
  • Healthy skin with an intact barrier
  • Minimal competing pigment in the surrounding skin

Proper preparation helps maximize the amount of laser energy reaching the follicle while minimizing unnecessary heat absorption by the skin.

What To Do Before Your Laser Hair Removal Appointment

1. Shave the Treatment Area the Morning Of (or Evening Before)

One of the most common issues we see is improper shaving before treatment.

Hair extending above the skin surface absorbs laser energy before it reaches the follicle, meaning valuable laser energy may be wasted on surface hair.

Long hairs can also singe during treatment, creating unnecessary odor and increased skin discomfort.

A close shave leaves the follicle intact beneath the skin while eliminating excess surface hair.

Best practices:

  • Use a clean, brand-new razor and do a "wet shave" in the shower with shaving cream or a gentle soap lather to minimize irritation.
  • Shave the morning of your appointment or, at the earliest, the evening before.

2. Arrive With Clean Skin

On the day of treatment, your skin should be thoroughly clean and recently washed with a gentle antibacterial soap (such as Dial or a similar formula).

Avoid applying the following to the treatment area:

  • Makeup
  • Lotions & body oils
  • Deodorant
  • Sunscreen / Sunblock

Many of these products create a physical barrier on the skin, contain ingredients that increase irritation, or feature pigments (like those found in makeup) that can interfere with laser light absorption.

3. Protect Your Skin From the Sun, Tanning Beds, and Self-Tanners

Sun exposure is one of the most common reasons laser appointments must be postponed.

When skin becomes tanned- whether from natural sunlight or sunless tanning products- melanin levels in the epidermis increase.

Because laser systems target pigment, tanned skin carries a much higher risk of:

  • Burns and blistering
  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation
  • Hypopigmentation

Recommendations:

  • Avoid intentional tanning: Stay out of the sun for at least 2 weeks before and after treatment. Note: This two-week buffer is the critical minimum window when active pigment is being produced, but ideally, your skin should remain as close to its natural baseline color as possible throughout your entire treatment series.
  • Apply daily sun protection: Wear SPF 50 or higher with Zinc Oxide daily on exposed treatment areas. Recommended physical sunscreens include Tizo, SkinMedica Essential Defense Mineral Shield Broad Spectrum, SkinCeuticals Physical Mineral UV Defense SPF 50, and EltaMD UV Sport Broad Spectrum.
  • Wear protective clothing: Keep treatment areas covered whenever you are outdoors.

4. Inform Your Provider About All Medications

Certain prescriptions, topical products, and over-the-counter supplements increase skin photosensitivity, which can make laser treatment unsafe until discontinued.

Examples include:

  • Antibiotics: Doxycycline, minocycline, and similar medications
  • Acne Treatments: Isotretinoin (Accutane)
  • Antifungals: Specific oral or topical antifungal agents
  • Herbal Supplements: St. John's Wort and other photosensitizing herbs

Always inform your provider about any medications, supplements, or active skincare products you have recently started.

What NOT To Do Before Laser Hair Removal

Don't Wax, Pluck, Thread, or Tweeze

Laser treatment requires the hair root to remain intact inside the follicle.

Waxing, threading, tweezing, epilating, and sugaring pull the hair out from the root.  Without the root present, the laser has no pigment target to destroy.

  • If you have been waxing or plucking, stop 4 weeks before treating facial areas and 6-8 weeks before treating body areas.
  • During your treatment series, shaving or trimming should be your only methods of hair removal.

Don't Use Self-Tanner or Sunless Tanning Products

Spray tans and self-tanning lotions deposit artificial pigment into the outer layers of the skin.

Because the laser cannot distinguish between natural melanin and self-tanner pigment, treating over self-tanners significantly increases the risk of superficial burns and hyperpigmentation.

  • Discontinue all self-tanning products at least 2 weeks before treatment and ensure all residual color has faded completely.
  • The Makeup Wipe Test: Before your appointment, firmly wipe a clean white makeup wipe across the self-tanned area. If any brown or orange residue transfers to the wipe, residual pigment remains, and your session must be rescheduled.

Don't Use Strong Active Skincare Ingredients On The Lasered Area

Retinoids and chemical exfoliants temporarily thin the epidermis and weaken the skin barrier.

Pause the following ingredients several days prior to treatment:

  • Retinoids (Retinol, Tretinoin, Adapalene)
  • Alpha Hydroxy Acids (Glycolic Acid, Lactic Acid)
  • Beta Hydroxy Acids (Salicylic Acid)
  • Harsh physical exfoliating scrubs

Don't Schedule Treatment Immediately After Sun Exposure

Even without a visible sunburn, recent sun exposure stimulates melanocyte activity.

If you have recently spent extended time outdoors or returned from a beach vacation, notify your provider so they can assess whether it is safe to proceed.

Limit Excessive Caffeine Before Your Session

While not mandatory, reducing caffeine intake on the day of your appointment can lower nervous system sensitivity, making treatment more comfortable- especially in sensitive areas like the upper lip or bikini line.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I shave the morning of my appointment?

Yes. Shaving the morning of your appointment (or the evening before) provides the best balance between eliminating surface hair and allowing razor irritation to subside.

Always use a fresh razor and a hydrating shaving cream or soap lather.

Can I wear deodorant?

No. For underarm treatments, skin must be completely bare. If necessary, your provider can cleanse the area upon arrival, but arriving with clean skin is always ideal.

Can I wear makeup?

No. Facial treatment areas must be free of all makeup, moisturizers, sunscreen, and cosmetics prior to laser application.

Can I exercise before laser hair removal?

Strenuous exercise right before your session raises core body temperature and skin sensitivity. Post-treatment, you should avoid heavy physical exertion and exercise for 24–48 hours to prevent prolonged post-laser redness or irritation.

What if I have an ingrown hair?

Leave it alone. Avoid picking, squeezing, or digging at the skin. In many cases, lasering over an intact ingrown hair helps dry up the lesion and accelerates healing naturally.

Tell Us About Any Changes Since Your Last Visit

Every laser hair removal session must be assessed based on the condition of your skin on that specific day.

Even if you have been coming to Beam Laser Spa for years, please notify your laser specialist of any changes since your last visit, including:

  • New prescription or OTC medications
  • New herbal supplements and new topical products
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Recent cosmetic treatments (peels, injectables, microneedling on the treatment area)
  • Recent sun exposure or vacations
  • New diagnoses
  • Changes in your skincare routine

Situations That Require Rescheduling

If the treatment area develops any of the following conditions prior to your appointment, please contact us immediately to reschedule:

  • Active cold sores (HSV-1)
  • Warts
  • Bacterial, viral, or fungal skin infections
  • Open wounds, cuts, or abrasions
  • Rashes or contact dermatitis
  • Sunburn or severe skin irritation

Example: Clients scheduled for upper lip treatments occasionally arrive with an active cold sore.

Treating over an active viral outbreak is unsafe- not only does it aggravate the lesion, but the forced cryogen cooling spray used during treatment can aerosolize and spread viral particles across surrounding skin.

If you are ever unsure whether a spot or symptom requires delaying treatment, contact us proactively. We are always happy to advise you in advance.

Pre-Treatment Quick Reference Timeline

  • 4–8 Weeks Before: Stop waxing, threading, tweezing, epilating, sugaring, or bleaching (any method that removes hair roots).
  • 2 Weeks Before: Stop all sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanning/spray tan products.
  • 7–10 Days Before: Pause retinoids, chemical exfoliants, and strong active skincare ingredients on the treatment area.
  • 24 Hours Before: Clean-shave the treatment area with a fresh razor and shaving cream/lather.
  • Day of Treatment: Arrive with squeaky-clean skin. Do not apply lotion, oil, deodorant, makeup, or sunscreen.

Proper preparation creates the safest, most effective environment for laser energy to target the hair follicle while preserving the health of your skin.
